2 large patches. One 8 in x 4 in and another 6 in x 3 in.

The shades of rose turned chocolate brown the next day.

Found on the surface of an old ground up stump in Burke, VA.

I reached out to a prominent slime mold expert and this was his response:

It does appear to be an unusually large fruiting (immature and still developing) of a Stemonitis. During fruiting, species of Stemonitis go all the way from white to red, brown or black.

I found this wasp near a light on my house. The light was surrounded by araneid orb weavers (probably Araneus). Once the wasp got somewhat stuck, and the spider shot out to nab it, but being rather large and heavy, the wasp fell out of the web in the nick of time. This guy was pretty chunky, maybe 2-3 cm from head to the end of the abdomen.

Flinders Island cave-slater Echinodillo cavaticus. The world has only two known species of the very distinctive Echinodillo cave-slaters. One is found on the Marquesas Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This other species is known only from a small cave in southern Flinders Island, where its entire global range is measurable in square metres. We found this one during our Bush Blitz on Flinders Island in March 2014.

New one to me! This crazy nudibranch was not teeny -- about 1" long. Cream body with brown speckling and cool yellow lines. Large foot. Rows of gills like Dendronotus? Oral tentacles flicked up and down like a cockatoo's crest. BUT THE WEIRDEST THING were these crazy long flowing 'streamers' coming from the top of each rhinophore sheath - kind of looked like worms, though clearly attached and marked like the rest of the body (cream with brown specks). Found on Tubularia. Invasive? Video: https://www.flickr.com/photos/30314434@N06/25521619833/in/dateposted/

Photo of a badger from one of my camera traps. Prior to this summer, I have never had a picture of a badger. This is the second visit of what I assume is the same badger in about a month. Better picture this time.

I've asked some of our long-time docents if they'd ever seen a badger here and none had, so maybe this is an exciting comeback story. Badgers are an important predator of California ground squirrels, which seem to be increasing in numbers here.
