The endemic subspecies of marten is the largest obligate terrestrial member of the Weasel family to inhabit Haida Gwaii. It is not present on small islands, and ironically may be protecting native seabird islands on these small islands by reducing source populations of invasive, introduced rats on larger islands where marten reside.
