Originally from Kiwi Road, Taranaki, Feb 18 - clump had fallen on the road after storm.
With pin oak, throughout the area where pin oaks were found.
No aroma in field
No bulb, growing as singles or clusters
Closest visual match of known in NZ species is Inocybe sindonia but enough differences that this could be something new.
General environment. Open cast coal rehabilitation site turned into park on edge of town. Exotic trees have been planted in blocks, varying in size and shape. But repeating the same species where are dominated by aciccia, eucalyptus, pin oak, macrocarpa and japanese cedar. Is a patch of conifers as well.
A 'fairy ring' of paxius. Don't think I have observed fairy rings with mycorrhizal species before, although have seen lines before.
Find this intriguing. Does it indicate where the roots are infected? Or is it the area of mycelium that the species covers?
And why is the ring off set from the trunk - is at the drip line of the tree which must be 2-3 decades old. So is this infection post planting?
With eucalyptus only three fruiting bodies. Starting to dry out in wind due to exposed location.

The park was impacted by trees blowing over, sometimes large numbers by cyclone gabrielle that came through approx a year ago (Feb 2023)
This was fruiting next to a blown over Accaria fruiting on bark, branches etc.

Fruiting on an alive eucalyptus covering its exposed roots. Over a few square meters which for such small fruit bodies seems a large area.
Were solid, was expecting soft like slime mold. But were robust and held their shape when touched. Color seemed to change with moisture level.

Fruiting in thick acacia duff. Approx 10 fruit bodies, unfortunately nearly all were old, caps had brown on them and gills changed color to brown tones.
One fruit body was still fresh / young. Its stype ended in an enlargement (the other two stipes shown were softer / degraded and snapped off / broke off leaving section in the ground) Not a bulb as such but definite thickening.

immature two frb had fused stem, and other cluster of two were also fused. The larger cluster is well connected and I can't easily see to the base of the stem. No singles present.
Gill edge appears to be jagged and adnexed.
Cap surface was slick / greasy to touch and changed color with moisture. Cap edge was wavey and not circular. It also was mostly flat and not funnel shaped as one might expect.
Stem is hollow
Fruiting on / right next to exotic wood chip. Most likely from felled material from cyclone gabrielle which went through a year ago (Feb 2023). Although there wasn't much of a pile, and very close by was a patch of trees that had been completely taken out. There was not wood chip present in that area, so it seems to me they were harvested or turned into firewood.
Say all that to mention that the small pile may have been post gabrielle and a more recent wind fall.
Was thinking Lyophyllum atratum. Seems to match and has host eucalyptus which was definitely an option for the wood chip.
