DC January (indoor) iNaturalist gathering report

We had a small gathering at my house yesterday with @muir, @maryeford, @danbeaupre, @stsang, and @jackcamino. Good food and drink were consumed (including delicious flan made by Jack!) and iNaturalist knowledge was shared. I meant to take more photos of people, but I got distracted.

Below (left to right): @jackcamino (eating flan), @maryeford (getting ready to leave), and @stsang (looking at bats)

It was a little chaotic with the 3 year olds, but they had fun too (they argued over things like whether or not a plastic sea lion needed to swim in the dog's water dish and who got to wear a cat costume).

Below: @muir with his son and my daughter.

Unfortunately, my whole household came down with some kind of flu in the ~12 hours afterwards, so I sincerely hope that no one else picks up what we have.

Who wants to plan for February? March? April? I know several of you expressed interest in future events. Pick a date and location that works for you and let's make it happen. @treegrow do you still want to do winter tree ID in Rock Creek Park?

Tagging several who are interested: @laura_sebastianelli @katzyna @calopteryx @ecologyelise @mattluizza @judygva @timbir5

Sure, I'm still up for winter tree etc. ID in Rock Creek Park in February. If we go towards the end of February (Sat, 18 or 25), we may also be able to find skunk cabbages in bloom. I know a whole bunch of easily accessible patches that we could check. We may even happen upon some early season pollinators if we're lucky.

I like to hear about your gatherings- maybe I can join in one time. Sorry to hear about the flu---my family got stomach flu right before Christmas :(

Ooh that sounds great! I don't think I've ever seen skunk cabbage flowers open.

It was a nice gathering and it always makes me happy to be around very interesting people. Thanks all for guiding me on my first steps, and thanks Carrie for opening your house. I am healthy, actually I feel stronger and a little wiser, haha. Count me in for February.

Thank you so much @carrieseltzer! That was fun and productive. I vote for Feb 25 for winter tree ID and skunk cabbages! Thanks for the suggestion @treegrow.

Sorry to have missed the gathering. I'm out of town most of the weekends in February, so can't join the tree ID on Feb 18th or 25th. But I'm up for an event on the morning or early afternoon of Feb 11 or 12, even if it's just a short outing. One idea could be life on and under logs--last year, I found lots of active insects and native centipedes (besides fungi, lichens, and moss) under logs in Potomac Overlook Regional Park during February.

Sorry I missed the gathering! I'm game for February, except for the 18th through the 22nd (back in Colorado).
