These water monitors live around Pulau Sepa Resort, mostly in the back near the garbage pile. They get quite large and don't bother you so you can get pretty close to one to observe them.

Description

A surprising find when I was at Pulau Sepa Resort running a workshop! They were not there the first night, but the second day appeared and were roosting around the island and stayed for the duration of our time there. At night, very active and noisy. By day I would find pairs spread around the island like this, and found only one group (~25-30 individuals). Unclear if they are permanent or migratory. Could be vampyrus or hypomelanus, though I'm leaning vampyrus due to relative size and the mantle coloration (hence the ID). Couldn't get a good picture since everything was so backlit from the extra sunny days we got.

And yes there really is an island there but it's so small I can't get it to appear on any version of Google Map.

We found a HUGE walking stick female while out catching bats and she was moving quite fast so it was hard to get a great photo. There were about 3 or 4 of us with headlamps in a tight cave space so the lighting is very odd. I can't seem to find any IDs of what this species is--it has a distinct white mark on the back shaped like a heart.

Pallas's Tube-nosed Fruit Bat Nyctimene cephalotes

Description

We (my Indonesian student Sheherazade and I) have a Pteropus-durian pollinator/seed dispersal study going on out in Sulawesi right now and part of that study requires capture of other co-occurring fruit bats. She got this feisty female yesterday, on a very small island that does not have any fruiting trees, so we suspect that she roosts here.

We are calling this a Nyctimene cephalotes for now, but the yellowish eye rings are an interesting morphological trait. The species is recognized to have a rathe wide distribution, so taxonomic questions are not surprising given the lack of study into this group thus far.
