I live in British Columbia in a little village up Burrard Inlet just 30 minutes north of the city of Vancouver. It lies on the parimeter of Mount Seymour Provincial Park, an area of 35 square kilometres of protected coastal forest. This area gives entrance to mountain wilderness and several mountain peaks. All of it, literally in my back yard. A routine walk will take me, on unmaapped trails, amongst old growth forest where evidence of logging still remains. Over the years of living here, and being part of such an ecosystem, I've come to appreciate the lives of plants and animals. So much of what I know is instinctive, learned through direct observation. For a good part of my life,I have volunteered at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden and had the privilege to be a part of plant research groups. Not surprisingly, my husband and I built a garden on rocky sloping ground with a natural stream running diagonally through the property. Our labour of love!
