Description

At 34cm in length, the Giant Antshrike is quite the monster and one of the largest antbirds (family Thamnophilidae). As you can see by the powerful hooked bill, even the largest of insects, as well as amphibians are reptiles (including small snakes), have a lot to fear from the Giant Antshrike. Despite its massive size, however, the Giant Antshrike is somewhat of a skulker and not easy to see well. Although, I had seen this species in the Atlantic forests of Brazil, I was delighted to see this male of the slightly smaller argentina subspecies so well!
