Help manage Ontario’s elk!
The American elk (Cervus elaphus) is one of four members of the deer family (Cervidae) existing in Ontario. Native elk populations were extirpated from the province in the late 1800s. Elk restoration efforts were undertaken by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (MNRF) along with many partners and volunteers beginning in the late 1990s. Because of these efforts, elk now inhabit several areas across Ontario. Surveying elk is difficult because many elk have dispersed far from the original release sites and elk are often clustered in small and widely scattered groups. You can help us plan more efficient and effective population surveys in the future by submitting your observations of elk in Ontario on this iNaturalist page. Location information will be kept private and used by MNRF staff to plan future population assessments. Please include the location and number of elk seen, and if available, include any photographs to assist in sex and age classification.
Thank you for helping to manage Ontario’s elk population!
