I'm cheering for the mosquito this time! These large flies were impossible to escape, even on high mountain slopes with a good wind. Their bites were painful and left a good-size welt, but this one seemed to have a biter of its own. The mosquito stayed on its back and appeared to be feeding on it.

Bee was observed feeding on Calamintha ashei plant in full bloom. This was the beginning of the bloom for this calamint population, and an early observation of the bee compared to known samples. This is the first Blue Calamintha Bee ever photographed outside of known paratype locations. The previous records for the bee came from 16 square miles in Lake Placid, Florida. This specimen was released unharmed, only temporarily restrained for species identification photos.

Description

When I observed this 3 inch creature moving. The body moved like an armadillo in sections a type of exoskeleton. It seemed to have two heads and I could not tell which was the front or rear. At one end it seemed to have a white eye and mouth. At the other end it seemed to have a black eye, mouth and nose like a snorkel toughing the round. when I picked it up the body was cold and I turned it over to look underneath. It had many leg which seem bidirectional. Then as I held it tightly on my right hand I reached with my left hand, pinched the snorkel which was hard like an apple stalk and attempted to move it and it snapped breaking. the little creature made a loud scream EEEEE! which effected my ears. the creature started to bleed yellow a lot, the liquid was bubbling and the fumes effected my throat making hard to breath so much so that I had to move away. At that point in but it down as it emptied bleeding the yellow liquid and died. I'm so sorry I didn't know my curiosity would cause it to die. So I would like to know what it was. Please for I am so deeply hurt and I hope it was not the only one left of it's kind.

Female beetle, 2.2 mm long. Collected from redbay trees with symptoms of laurel wilt disease. Small local flare-up of laurel wilt, in trees that had apparently sprouted from the stumps of trees that were originally killed about 7-8 years ago (based on tree rings). Also shown: cross-section of wood with staining showing the outline of the beetle's galleries (tunnels), stem with "sawdust noodles" coming from beetle entrance hole, and wilted crown of tree. Also, one cutaway shot of a beetle within her gallery, within stained wood.
