Dwarf Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, subspecies not yet described). Ribbon Reefs, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Two whales cross below me. I spent 5 days at this location on a whale research vessel as part of a dwarf minke satellite tagging expedition. Over 50 whales were sighted and four tags were successfully applied. Natural light. Underwater housing, dome port.

Dwarf Minke Whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata, subspecies not yet described). Ribbon Reefs, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. This whale approached my boat at speed, surfaced, exhaled and made eye contact as it passed. I spent 5 days at this location on a whale research vessel as part of the world's first minke satelite tagging expedition. The SE trades were blowing strongly and the minkes reveled in the conditions bodysurfing the waves. Handheld, natural light. Pam Osborn image.
