Road kill along Hwy 88. The first I've seen in the Sierra in 35 years of fairly extensive exploration. Apparently they used to be more common.

It was the first time that I heard a porcupine "talking". What an amazing experience! There were two porcupines facing each other on a tree. It seemed to me that one of them did all the talking. Initially I thought that it was a male courting a female but when I saw them crawling in two different directions I figured that it was not the case. Maybe the chatty porcupine simply asked its buddy in which direction it would have liked to crawl. It's pretty amazing that I was able to record this gentle sound with my cheap smartphone.

I recorded sound of my new neighbor porcupine, we call him/her Percy. This has to be played at maximum loudest setting. A chipmunk is chirping loudly in the background, but you can hear Percy doing his "searching" sound, circling the ground looking for acorns and an apple.

I was immensely surprised and pleased to see this sweet, young and healthy looking porcupine in my yard munching away on the bountiful oak acorns fallen to the ground. I hope it stays around. Our habitat offers lots of hemlocks for safe harbor and no dogs in the neighborhood.
