I had noticed it already on Saturday, at Reagan Ranch, and when I heard it again around the Grasslands trail at Malibu Creek SP, with much less traffic noise in the background, I tried to spot what I thought was a Wing-tapping Cicada with a one-note, monosyllabic song that sounded like a sharp pop. I looked and looked, and then was hit by a tiny pebble. Aha!! Fruiting Hairy Vetch with exploding seed pods. That explains the soundscape.
