Male scorpionflies often evolve exaggeratedly elongated abdominal segments that are used as a sexual display to the females, and a combat weapon in intra-sexual disputes.
N. exaggerata has the longest male abdomen surpassing all the formerly known species in the extant Panorpoidea. Although greatly resembles scorpionflies in the genus Leptopanorpa (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?taxon_id=785780), N. exaggerata is actually a member of the genus Neopanorpa (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?taxon_id=708370), suggesting multiple origins of the elongated abdominal segments in scorpionflies.
