Description

I’m reasonably confident in this ID but I consider it still tentative. I am happy to have discussions and other IDs. Two exuvia collected off concrete culvert edges. I initially keyed these to Epitheca sp by messing up the second couplet in Tennessen 2020, but recently decided to check my ID because it was my first go at learning to ID exuvia. I'm glad I decided to give them a second look!

Note that the photos of the frontoclypeal ridge piece do not show the long setae. They apparently broke off in my clumsy attempts to remove a clump of mud, which caused great confusion until I examined the second one. You can see the points where the setae were once attached - a series of small circular spots. A 'dirty' looking photo of the ridge on the second exuvia shows the distinctive setae, though they are matted down with the antennae..

If confirmed, this is the first time evidence of this species has been found in Texas since 1966. I have spent a fair amount of time sleuthing for habitat and tracking down the details of the Dot-map specimen records listed in Odonata Central.

I'll be sending these exuviae to John Abbott and will post an update from him after he has a chance to look at them.

S8 without anterolateral sclerite, S2 with middorsal hook -->
S6 sternite with anterolateral sclerite --> Neurocordulia

Frontoclypeal ridge straight to convex -->
S8 and S9 middorsal hooks well-developed, projecting dorsoposteriorly -->
S8 posterolateral spines parallel to segment margin (I think so). Setae on anterior margin of frontoclypeal ridge long, surface of frons smooth --> Neurocordulia alabamensis

An unsuccessful emergence that appeared to have been stopped by a Polistes sp wasp killing and eating it. I watched the wasp eat and chew out chunks of tissue, fly away with them, and then return for more. A series of photos showing some of this, including some in which the wasp is holding the right eye prior to flying away with it.

Description

Here is the latest in my long-continuing series, "Not-Quite-Ready-For-Audubon-Magazine-Cover" bird images. I have full confidence that most birders will be able to recognize the important field marks of this male Yellow Warbler, even in the first blurry image. I include a 2nd image (taken a few moments earlier) just to solidify the ID, if not my place in bird photography legend.
The habitat was willow/alder thickets along the riparian corridor of Cherry Creek in the park.

Description

I'm on the road and don't have much access to internet, but I thought I'd upload these observations from a few nights ago of a genus near (?) and dear (???) to my heart.
https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/gcwarbler/53116-hypoprepia-lichen-moths-what-a-mess
The extensive dark markings and all yellow ground color seem to point to H. cadaverosa, a species heretofore confined to the Rocky Mountain states.
I'm posting two different individuals (based on "fingerprinting of wing patterns"). I may have had more but they were moving around a lot.
