Description

Observations from a trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, October 2006.
Wild Olive Tortoise Beetle - Physonota alutacea (large larvae, 10-12 mm)
bugguide.net/node/view/8350
These bizarre creatures were found on their host plant, Wild Olive (Cordia boissieri - Boraginaceae), a small native tree. BugGuide says that "undisturbed" adults are silvery, but all those I saw had a mostly transparent covering. Larvae are bizarre segmented creatures that remind me of trilobites. They have tail-like appendages that resemble the fleshy appendages of some caterpillars, so I wonder if they are mimics.

I found this individual while working at the McAllen Nature Center 2.5 years ago. Never uploaded it since we were trying to get a paper published. I got tired of trying to get that done so here it is. This species hasn’t been seen since it was first discovered in 1939 in Edinburg, TX. ID by Dr. Oscar Francke and Joel Hallan.

This record is from November second, 2017. I’m uploading it because it may be of some significance to anyone studying arachnids in New York City.
This spider was identified by arachnologists as being a sheetweb spider of the genus Stemonyphantes. This genus is not previously recorded in North America on iNaturalist or bugguide. I found this specimen in November of 2017 in a historic army base, and it’s likely that introduction occurred at some point due to international commerce. I never found a second specimen.

What first appeared to be a tiny beetle trying to hide from a larger Colonus sp. jumping spider, turned out to be this tiny, super cool jumper! Found along a branch hanging near fence post.

Our first night down in the LRGV, we decided to explore the property of the AirBNB we stayed at, being tired from the 8 hour drive. I'm so glad we did as I found so my lifers on this property and single night alone! I am very appreciative of the Darling family keeping this piece of land 'wild' and native.
