Description

I assume these are white butterfly eggs since lots around this year. On a caper bush, which the machine learning algorithm suggested this observation was.

What caught my attention was the color change from white to quite yellow in the eggs. Given that the small caterpillar was yellowish i would assume this is to do with maturity.

Found on beach by Dan Spach’s Wilderness Youth Project group. Turns out they were not the first to observe it, but at the time it seemed like it. So exciting for all the kids to experience first hand such a unique find!! WYP has said “we’re in the business of creating peak experiences.” This was certainly one of them!

A few barrel-shaped creatures with a hole through the middle and a pale blue streak, washed up on the tide with thousands of clear salp blobs. Animal seemed to be alive on the inside.

Description

What an intricate little pupa! the magpie moth larva I was raising pupated a few days ago, only just now realised how beautiful the pupa is! unfortunately I didn't make an observation of the caterpillar, but it had the tufts of hair typical for Nyctemera amicus, but it's possibly a hybrid aswell. will be interesting to see imago.

Large brown and green caterpillar with little fern like fronds underneath, camouflaged against tree trunk. From the leaves I photographed I think the tree is Myrsine australis (Matipo). Will list another similar caterpillar, further up the trunk, as separate observation.

Phronima (four specimens) in their salps (see previous observation of salp).

Shot # 8 shows one in its salp with a hundred babies. #12 shows a baby which escaped and swam over to another.
