Richly colored gold and purplish-red. I believe this could be Hyalorista taeniolalis but just seems to be so far from other reports of this species, in both MPG or here on iNat. Just does not seem to be looking right for Pyrausta species such as P. socialis or P. fodinalis. Appreciate any feedback from those more familiar with Hyalorista taeniolalis.

There are 2-3 records on BOLD with undivided white on hindwing. White fringe still appears to be diagnostic. One from Texas:
http://v3.boldsystems.org/index.php/Public_RecordView?processid=ZYPAN632-10

Males of D. subdivisalis appear to lack the strong white line at mid-abdomen that D. maculalis and funeralis have. Females of all three taxa do have the line.

Description

My friends Brody (Photograph credit) and Chaney discovered this caterpillar at Splinter Hill Bog, Baldwin County, Alabama, USA.

This is the only photograph, as we know, of this caterpillar - It was posted on Facebook's Caterpillars of the Eastern United States & BugGuide utilizing the Moth Photographers Group website as well.

See Below:

This ID is the one which parties involved agreed upon. It will be the first documented photo; as of the sighting date, of this caterpillar.

Sam Jaffe compared the two moths below to come to this conclusion:

Sam Jaffe - "Here is the Borneo larva - look how similar the spiracular pattern is. Host is Persimmon"...
