Description
Similar to Sympistis major but note more black marking of the claviform, orbicular, reniform spots, also the white hindwing with black scales in margin and some veins. I think the white hindwing seems to indicate this is a male example. It looks identical with Jim Troubridge specimen on MPG here http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=10135.6
There is a nearby record, living moth photo, from Culp Valley, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, in BG here https://bugguide.net/node/view/2145174
Even closer, maybe a mile or two away, at Scissors Crossing, the similar date Tomas Mustelin specimen on BOLD here https://v3.boldsystems.org/index.php/Public_RecordView?processid=RDNM564-05

Description
Photos are posted in the order they were taken. Near the end of the photo series (14th photo) the moth abruptly popped its wings from the upward position they had been in, to a 45 degree downward position and stopped nectaring. It stayed that way until I inadvertently disturbed it, and then it went back to nectaring but it kept its wings in "resting" position thereafter. Photo credit: NPS / Paul G. Johnson.

Others from this collection were sent to UCONN for barcoding, results "fell out" to Hulstina xera. Contact David Wagner for specifics.
Hard to image with my system, there is a splash of orange within the wings.
It also lost many scales being so active in the container.
I may have better images of this moth from past years that I will be posting.
