Description
not A. ellipticus; comparison with one in the last photo. a little searching around turned up the species A. steptus which bears a passing resemblance, but I'm not sure it's a perfect match.

Description
Found them under a rock in a single chamber next to a Gnathamitermes colony.
Appears to have a distinct major caste. As far as I know the only other polymorphic thief ants in the Americas are from the fugax group (johnsoni, vinsoni), but these seem distinctly like pygmaea group. Most likely undescribed/new.

Unusual individual with fused AMEs. Behavior was completely normal, depth perception seemed unimpaired while following and interacting with prospective prey insects. A genetic abnormality, or the result of a molting defect?

I figured these were something interesting when I saw them, though they were undescribed at the time. It turns out this a species endemic to this site, as well as the only US Asellid endemic to a thermal spring.
