08-24-14_MG_2415 Macro lens only today but even that wasn't really enough for this tiny spider I keep finding them in the webs of Black and Yellow Argiope spiders, at first your think they are just leftovers, Not sure the exact species here but the body length on these cannot be over 4 to 5 mm, With legs they are longer. Used a 180 mm with a 2xtc on and 36mm of tubes add a light breeze I was happy to walk away with a couple shots I could keep.

Fishing spider subduing Enallagma civile (photos 1, 2) and water strider (photos 3, 4)

Here is the tail-end of the spider subduing the damselfly. After that didn't end up being a meal for the spider due to an invasion of water striders it had a try with one of them.

As you can see from the lurching posture of the damselfly (comparing the initial two photos) and the lifting in last photos, the amount of force expended on some of these captures must be amazing.

Battle Of The Spiders
I kept this one due to the interesting behavior. Had to shoot straight up into the sun so I only ended up with one shot half-way decent. The large black spider is a Bold Jumping Spider and it's prey that lost the battle is a Furrow Orbweaver. They are about the same size. The small spider above them is probably the male furrow orbweaver, they are much smaller than the females.

The web is more interesting than the spider, in my opinion. It is constructed as half a typical orb web. Then, where the other half should be, there is a sort of cob-web with a small funnel-shaped shelter for the spider.

There is a line connecting the center of the orb portion of the web to the shelter where the spider sits. I suspect this serves two purposes: vibration detection, and a quick access to the orb.

Had a wonderful time with the East Texas Master Naturalists today. Presented on botany, then led a little field trip around the Nature Center in Tyler.

I stopped to get some gas in Canton and went to this park that I've been to once before. This is an amazing park -- if you find yourself in Canton and want to see some nature, check out Cherry Creek Park! It's the closest place to DFW where you can spot sundews (Drosera) I think.

A few of these I'll have to work on ID's later on -- just wanted to get them uploaded first. :)
