Aquatic or emergent, maturing in late summer in non-calcareous silty or peaty-sand, often amongst cobble and fine gravel; typically with little or no associated vegetation.

World: North America
Can be separated from Maritime Quillwort, I. maritima, by having megaspores <30 micrometres, bearing thin sharp spines and having an obscure girdle. Maritime Quillwort has short, blunt, stout spines.
