The johnny darter, Etheostoma nigrum, is a species of ray-finned fish found in shallow water throughout eastern North America. Its name comes from the Greek root words etheo, meaning to filter, stoma, meaning mouth, and nigrum, meaning black in Latin. They are important members of their aquatic ecosystems as predators and prey, and do not normally cause problems or have negative effects on their habitats.
