butterfly sitting on leaf
Beautiful monarch butterfly, easily IDed by the coloration. Seen next to the highway - may be pollinating the pioneer species that grow in the disturbed habitat. Maybe 3-4 inches long.
-about the size of an American nickel
-appeared to be feeding
-found on sidewalk leading to interpretation center
Three of these I identified as Galápagos Pintails, but I'm not sure what the other 6 were. (The "number of individuals spotted" only includes the unknown individuals.) Some of them were swimming in small groups in the salt marsh, and some of them were preening on logs or rocks in the water.
