Description

It isn't unusual to find a katipo accompanied by slaters. It isn't even that unusual to find a katipo under folded, dead marram. But this particular clump of marram is on a mound of sand quite far from the nearest dry dune, isolated by 10s of meters of ephemeral dune wetland. First time I've found a katipo in this area, despite lots of searching.

Body length approx 18mm.
Creates a strand of silk to drop from a height much like an orb web spider would.
Very flat body. When it flattens it's legs the whole spider becomes 2-3 mm high. Presumably to fit under bark.
