Description

http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Russula_cantharellicola.html

Found this morning buried completely under Quercus agrifolia duff (detected by a shrump) - It seemed like a Russula. The way it stained vinaceous brown with handling reminded me of Lactarius argillaceifolius, but there was no latex (and it was very fresh & moist) and no zonation on the cap. Over time the discoloration deepened (images in chronological order). The odor and taste was mild. The texture was very firm and dense. It seemed heavy for its size.

Description

cf. Hymenopellis furfuracea; less likely Gymnopous dryophilus or Psathyrella candolleana. You can see the (dead?) root these are on in one of the pix; it's in someone's yard underneath (what I think is) a Bradford pear tree (although there are oaks & mixed hardwoods within 100+'). No distinctive odor (just a mild "general mushroom) smell; I did not taste it. Cap & gills don't bruise any particular color (even 15+ minutes after bruising). I'm a pure amateur at mushrooms & trying to figure this one out with the book "A field guide to mushrooms of the Carolinas" (Bessette, Bessette, and Hopping; 2018). Any help with ID (and commentary) would be appreciated! (I'm doing a spore print now, and will post results ihere if/when I get any useful results.) (P.S. - Sorry for the quality of some of the images; don't have a decent camera with me at the moment.)
