Description

La mariposa daga (Marpesia zerynthia) es una especie de mariposa de la familia Nymphalidae que habita al norte y del sur de Mesoamérica.
La distribución de Marpesia zerynthia está limitada a la ecozona del neotropico específicamente; se ha visto en América del Sur en Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia y el sur de Perú. También en el centro de México y, raramente, puede ser observada en Texas en los Estados Unidos.
Esta especie habita bosques tropicales de caducifolios y perennifolios, y puede ser observado en espacios abiertos. Marpesia zerynthia puede habitar en altitudes de hasta 2400 m. Es generalmente una especie de bosques de nube, es más común entre aproximadamente los 800 a 1800 m.
Marpesia zerynthia es típicamente encontrado como grupos pequeños de aproximadamente seis a 12 machos, los cuales están atraídos a la arena mojada y barro para beber del musgo rico en minerales. PZona particularmente favorecidas son alimentar los lugares de poca corriente en los rioss o a lo largo de caminos de montaña. Durante la temporada de verano las mariposas aletean constantemente y se alimentan alimentar con las alas erectas o parcialmente abiertas. Cuando las condiciones son más frescas aguantan sus alas completamente abiertas, haciéndolo posible observar la coloración oscuro marrón de la superficie ventral de las alas.

Los adultos vuelan deprisa, y es a menudo sabido a la juntan en grupos pequeños bajo hojas. En México ellos normalmente vuelan de mayo a noviembre, o julio a octubre en el sur de Texas. La nutrición está obtenida del néctar de Cordia y Croton, y de excremento y varios otras fuentes no florales.
Las hembras son más esquivas, raramente descendiendo del bosque. Entre estaciones se han visto en follaje más bajo en el bosque.
La especie es sexualmente ligeramente sexualmente dimorfa, con las hembras típicamente siendo más redondas y más grandes que los machos. Especímenes en cautividad tiene una tendencia a ser más pequeños que aquellos capturados en la naturaleza.
