Poor photo, but bee captured and released during an outreach event. Bee was handled with proper permitting. Caught off tall bellflower
There were at least four, maybe more.
Traveling Survey. Found on 1-hour long Bombus survey over a meandering transect. Number of each species and sex/caste as well as floral interactions recorded during survey. Habitat: weedy field with volunteer rye from previous growing season when rye was harvested; any remaining seed that germinated in the fall was left as a cover crop, so not seeded since harvest; to be herbicided and planted to no-till corn within the coming week. Broadly surrounded by agriculture and deciduous forest. Flowering plant species at time of survey: Viola sororia (uncommon), Thlaspi arvense (uncommon), Taraxacum sp. (abundant). Time: 16:05-17:05. Survey conditions: mostly cloudy, breezy, 70F. Species present were: B. impatiens (24Q-f; 1Q-ns), B. pensylvanicus (1Q-f), B. auricomus (1Q-f), B. griseocollis (19Q-f), B affinis (2Q-f), B. bimaculatus (9Q-f; 1Q-ns), B. vagans (2Q?-f). Flyovers included: B. auricomus (1Q), B. impatiens (1Q). Later searching in nearby area in same habitat yielded additional griseocollis Q, impatiens Q, a few bimaculatus Q, and 1 auricomus Q. For B. affinis, 2 Q foraging.

My first affinis of 2021 visiting spirea in a front yard. I saw several affinis in the alley of this block last year. Correct time for the photo is 9:18 a.m. I don’t know why it loaded as 4:18 a.m.
