Walked from Jeffords lot to Kalkin, 0839-0850. Saw this adult Cooper's Hawk on the Andrew Harris Commons sitting in an oak tree. It was uperturbed by passersby. 18 deg F, light north wind. UVM campus, tall buildings and scattered trees.

I recorded a couple of bird songs from my backyard to put together a little demo for WFB 131. These were in suburban South Burlington, an area with scattered trees, shurbs, gardens, and lawn. The time was 1220 and I recorded for about 5 minutes. It is 65 degrees F, 100% cloud cover with a low ceiling, light southwest wind.

From the deck at 9 Sebring Road. There seem to be a lot of birds moving today. Yellow Warbler was new for the yard this spring, but the White-crowned Sparrows have been around for about 8 days. The House Wren finally decided which box to use.
Habitat - Suburban lawn north of the UVM Horticultural Farm. Mostly lawn, garden, and a few shade trees.

This was a 10-minute field trip, 0955-1005 to look for birds on the UVM campus. We left the Aiken Center and walked to Royal Tyler Theater to check out the conifer stand. It was mostly sunny, 20 deg F and slight south wind. The part of UVM campus that we visited consisted of several tall buildings and an open green with scattered trees. All birds were either seen in flight or on the buildings. Not much bird diversity, but this was a practice run to check out our iNaturalist skills and add to the UVM Ornithology Project. There were 73 of us contributing to this observation.

I was watching birds in my backyard in suburban South Burlington, when I noticed that there was something other than a Dark-eyed Junco on the ground under the feeder. I grabbed my binoculars and it turned out to be a Chipping Sparrow. We occasionally have Chipping Sparrows in winter, but this was the first this winter. I got my camera and was able to get an identifiable picture.

The observation occurred at 1:59 PM and the bird remained under the feeder for 7 minutes.
