Meet up in New Orleans on August 6! And stickers!

Next month I'll be giving a talk about iNaturalist at the Ecological Society of America's Annual Meeting in New Orleans. It's part of a session called Natural History in the Digital Age on Monday, August 6 at the Convention Center.

That evening, I've reserved space for folks to meet up at a place nearby called Coterie. We'll have some appetizers and there will be a happy hour menu for you to buy drinks and other food.

135 Decatur Street, French Quarter, New Orleans
Monday, August 6
6:30-8 PM

Also, stickers! I'll have the very first (official) iNaturalist stickers.

iNaturalist stickers have so far only been spotted in captivity, but will be released into the wild in New Orleans with the help of enthusiastic observers.

I'm tagging the top 10ish observers in the state of Louisiana, along with the top 10(ish) in Orleans Parish, then folks from a bounding-box search of southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and western Florida. Then a few ecologists I know mainly outside of iNat who I know/think will attend. I know some of you tagged here are likely too far to make it, but I wanted to be inclusive, especially in case you're coming for the meeting anyways. Please tag others in the region who may want to attend!

I would LOVE to attend, Carrie, but I'll be in Boston that date. I hope @misspt, @mcferny, @terit or maybe @ajm1993 (who's not on your list but is coming up fast) can come to represent Mississippi. The esa meeting is a great venue to get out the word about iNaturalist, and you get me thinking about others like the Wildlife Society....
Will your talk or slides be available afterwards? I'm giving a two-session course in iNaturalist at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in October and would love to get some tips. Also, how can we get some of those stickers?!
Good luck with your planning - it should be great.

Thanks, @janetwright! Sorry you'll be away during that time. My talk is just a 5 minute Ignite talk, but I can definitely share the slides. Hope some of the folks you tagged can come and bring you a sticker!

Posted by carrieseltzer about 6 years ago

WHAT? Those stickers are awesome!

Posted by vermfly about 6 years ago

That sounds like an awesome talk! I'll be stuck on the other side of the state though. Love the stickers, too!

Posted by ilouque about 6 years ago

Sorry to miss you @ilouque! Maybe someone else can bring you some stickers.

We'll be distributing stickers in California, too @vermfly! If anyone has an interest in bulk ordering iNaturalist stickers, please email me at

Definitely extra incentive to get my butt to a meetup out here. I need some of these stickers.

Posted by vermfly about 6 years ago

I think I'll be there!

Posted by cypseloides about 6 years ago

can’t wait for stickers

Posted by sambiology about 6 years ago

Glad you'll be there, @cypseloides! Tagging @andy71 since he and I corresponded about this idea a while back.

I'm re-tagging folks who haven't chimed in yet one way or another, in case this was initially buried in other notifications. Hope you can join us at the ESA New Orleans meet up on August 6!

Can't make it. Wish I could but it's during a work week and I live about 6 hours away from there.

Posted by royaltyler almost 6 years ago

I can't make it either, I live 2 hours away and the next morning is the first day of school for my children. I really wish I could make it.

Posted by misspt almost 6 years ago

Thanks so much for the invite. Sounds like fun. I am sorry that I won't be able to make it.

Posted by terit almost 6 years ago

Thank you so much for inviting me! Those are great stickers! I would love to be there, but it is a bit too far on a school night.

Posted by amberenergy almost 6 years ago

I'll have to think about it. Not sure if i have plans.

Posted by zoology123 almost 6 years ago

Can't make it, I have work that day.

An event I will be making the drive to South Louisiana for is the Pollination Celebration by the Tangipahoa Master Gardeners. I will be speaking during two different time slots. I would love to meet any fellow Inaturalists.
It is September 15 at the Hammond Research station.

Posted by royaltyler almost 6 years ago

I might be able to attend. I'll check my work schedule and see if I can get off.

Posted by thefairybogmother almost 6 years ago

I will do my best to attend. Mondays and Tuesdays are my busiest days at work; as we are trapping and identifying mosquitoes those days. Incidentally, as I haven't been on iNaturalist in some time, the best way to ensure that I receive any messages is via email: Thanks!

Posted by jameswbeck almost 6 years ago

Well this is neat. I will try my best to make it.

Posted by natureguydev83 almost 6 years ago

Sounds like there should be an iNaturalist meetup page!

Posted by janetwright almost 6 years ago

This sounds like fun- I’ll be there! Years ago I put together a symposium on citizen science at the 2010 Entomological Society of America meeting, and it was great to talk with entomologists doing different types of citizen science work. Sampling bias was a big concern and training was an issue, but I’m sure that citizen science has progressed and I would love to hear how things are going now. Thanks for organizing this get-together!

Thanks, everyone! I look forward to meeting some of you in person. Send me a message or email me (carrie at inat(uralist) dot org) if you want to go out iNaturalisting sometime next week, or if you have any tips for where I should go! I'm staying near the convention center (Sunday night - Friday evening) and won't have a car.

Hope some of you can go to @royaltyler's talks in September, too!

Posted by carrieseltzer almost 6 years ago

I’ll do my best. I’ve got some obligations earlier in the day, so I’ll have to see how things go with those.

Posted by henicorhina almost 6 years ago

i'll try to get there, i like the stickers

Posted by nolafrog almost 6 years ago

I'll be coming down in the morning and poking around the Northshore. If anyone would like to join me, email me at

Posted by thefairybogmother almost 6 years ago

I wrote a short post with a group photo from the event tonight:

Posted by carrieseltzer almost 6 years ago

Thanks, Carrie! Looks like a big success.

Posted by janetwright almost 6 years ago

aw, shucks, missed it. hit me up, anyone who wants to go out into the Gulf

Posted by eustatic1 almost 6 years ago

I want to go out into the Gulf! Pelagic trips are few and far between in Louisiana.

Posted by cypseloides almost 6 years ago

I’m always up for going out into the gulf!

Posted by henicorhina almost 6 years ago

My water bottle looks classier now.

Posted by leptonia almost 6 years ago

There's a Gulf Trip that needs a couple folks to fill the boat for Sept 15th, saturday. it's all day out of Venice. email me at with "Pelagic trip sept 15th" and i can forward your information to the organizer, who can make the call, last i heard there were three spots left, but that was a bit ago, apologies for not checking sooner
