22 June/18

It's been a somewhat odd spring/summer. Usually by now there are lots of robins, waking me up in the false dawn with their tuneless song. Now it is a crow, and although I have heard robins around, I have not been able to take a photo of one yet.
Other differences:

  • The wood ducks seem to have vanished. Usually they hang around a specific part of the river for most of the summer.

  • There are fewer Blue Jays. Again, I've seen one or two, and heard them, but usually they are around the house making their raucous calls.

  • There are less Compton Tortoiseshells around, but I gather last summer was an exceptional one for that species. I have also seen fewer Mourning Cloaks, though both species have been seen this spring. Butterflies in general seem to be less common.

  • There have been two may fly emergence's. They look superficially similar, but the latest one is a little bit smaller than the earlier one.
