October 4-6 Bioblitz at Timberlake Biological Field Station

UPDATE:

The spring 2019 bioblitz at Timberlake was tons of fun. Between May 17-20, 18 observers made 5,379 observations of 1,103 species! https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2019-05-17&d2=2019-05-20&place_id=118103

Several folks attending the spring bioblitz asked for a fall get-together, so we have one scheduled for October 4-6. All the details are here:

Timberlake Biological Field Station is in Mills County, between Lampasas and Brownwood, on the Colorado River.

I can come down Friday evening after lectures are done, and then head back up to Dallas Sunday evening. That means two nights of mothing for me! :-)

Also tagging @melissa_duron and @k8thegr8

I am already packing! Looking forward to it. Was just fixing to register for the Native Plant Society Fall Symposium in Galvestion but had rather meet up with my iNat buddies!

Can I reserve a place to sleep again?

Been wishing I could return for another visit... Awesome place...

As luck would have it, I'm leading an interpretive walk that Saturday. :( I'll get out there eventually....

Posted by kimberlietx over 4 years ago

@connlindajo I'm equally excited about getting together with the crazy iNatters.

Posted by annikaml over 4 years ago

I'll put it on my calendar, I really want to come back out! May be tough with work and school, but I'm going to try! @eminoid

Posted by wildcarrot over 4 years ago

And @mikef451, it's safe to come. I have my own Outback now, so I don't need to try to harass you into selling yours to me. :-)

Posted by annikaml over 4 years ago

Good to know @annikaml! I plan on being there with my Outback. I've never been so pleased with the performance of a vehicle as I was driving it all over the place while there. Had a great time there in spring! Know the lay of the land better now. Can't wait! Have frozen DNA will travel.

Posted by mikef451 over 4 years ago

I will plan to do my best to get there Friday night. And @kimberlietx there are lots of other folks that can do interpretive walks but chance to get out here doesn't come along too often and so worth it.

Posted by brentano over 4 years ago

@anewman
Please arrange a swap with someone for your walk duties that day @kimberlietx. I can bring my bedstraw pillow to show you.

Posted by connlindajo over 4 years ago

On my calendar...and while everybody is looking at the ground for plants, bugs, etc., don't forget to keep an eye to the sky since this is getting close to the peak of hawk migration in CenTex!

Posted by gcwarbler over 4 years ago

@brentano @connlindajo I would love to swap out, but I've been booked to do this for 10 months. :(

Posted by kimberlietx over 4 years ago

Thanks for the Timber invite, Inatters. I'll make it there someday. My dear friends are getting married that Saturday. Have fun.

Posted by aprilsee over 4 years ago

I'm leading a field trip for the new class of Heart of Texas Master Naturalists that Saturday, but perhaps for Sunday...

Posted by bosqueaaron over 4 years ago

Thanks for the tag. I'll have to see if we can participate.

Posted by alflinn329 over 4 years ago

Tentatively out of town that weekend, but I should know more as the date approaches.

Posted by rymcdaniel over 4 years ago

Ooooo! I hope to come to this, but I've got something going on Friday, so perhaps I can make it after that.

So it's a tentative yep from me! :)

Posted by sambiology over 4 years ago

A maybe from me! Fingers crossed I can make it happen!

Posted by nanofishology over 4 years ago

@tadamcochran Tagging you again.

Posted by annikaml over 4 years ago

I'm a definitely maybe! I've put it on my calendar. It'll be a last minute decision.

Posted by tadamcochran over 4 years ago

I'll see if I can make it!

Posted by k8thegr8 over 4 years ago

I'll definitely put it on my calendar and see if I can make it.

Just letting folks know that the Timberlake bioblitz is still on for next weekend. I was hoping we'd have gotten some fall rains by now, so it may be a bit more desolate and brown than it was this spring. I haven't been out there since then.

Posted by pfau_tarleton over 4 years ago

Y'all have fun. We are planning a trip way west and one will be enough for us.

Posted by alflinn329 over 4 years ago

It'll be great fun! Looking forward to it!

Posted by mikef451 over 4 years ago

It can't be any drier and crunchier there than it is here in Lee County!

Posted by connlindajo over 4 years ago

I'll be there! And will bring some pitfall traps again :)

Posted by wildcarrot over 4 years ago

I just got the day off so I'll be there! I haven't camped in decades so this will be an adventure!

Posted by k8thegr8 over 4 years ago

Shucks. I'm not able to make it... :(

I know ya'll will still have a blast! Looking forward to seeing all of the observations roll in!

Posted by sambiology over 4 years ago

Planning to make a day trip of it on Saturday!

Posted by nanofishology over 4 years ago

My wife signed me up to visit the in-laws, so I won't be able to make it.

Posted by bosqueaaron over 4 years ago

As long as nothing comes up, I should be able to make it up there on Saturday.

Posted by rymcdaniel over 4 years ago

For folks coming Friday, please arrive about 4 pm or after. I'm eager to get back out there!

Posted by pfau_tarleton over 4 years ago

@sambiology and @bosqueaaron Sorry you are going to miss seeing me!

Posted by connlindajo over 4 years ago

There will be a baked potato and salad bar Saturday (either lunch or supper, not sure which). I'll try to bring enough for the folks that have said here that they're attending. I'm assuming that the river bed will be dry enough to be accessible this time. For those wanting to explore that habitat, maybe bring shoes or boots that you don't mind getting a little wet or muddy.

Posted by pfau_tarleton over 4 years ago

Thanks Dr. Pfau! Sounds great. See you Friday afternoon.

Posted by mikef451 over 4 years ago

See you there.

Posted by connlindajo over 4 years ago

Unfortunately, looks like I'm going to miss out on this one.

I just went through and made sure all the caterpillars were annotated as larvae...then filtered our observations by that annotation. The results? When @k8thegr8 attends a bioblitz, a dazzling array of caterpillars will be revealed! 24 species and counting!
