Description

Difficult to tell at this stage. This individual was alone, and far larger than any of the P. aquilonis seen earlier. The lip lacked any sign of yellowish coloration and from what was left of the anther sacs it seemed that they were at more of an acute angle.

Northern Small Yellow Lady's Slipper Cypripedium parviflorum var. makasin

Observer

Description

Somewhat tentative. These plants were less pubescent than C. reginae, had differently shaped leaves and seemed to be about the right size for C. parviflorum. If this is indeed C. parviflorum, C. parviflorum var. makasin seems like a good bet considering the habitat.

Description

100-175 individuals, displaying a wide range of flower color and nectary shape. After making the long drive to see P. tescamnis (at a known site) I doubted I would ever see P. purpurascens in person. It was a very pleasant surprise to find them while looking for another species, and I was excited to come away with photos of both of my favorite of Colorado's Platanthera species.

Description

Out of the eleven plants found, seven were in flower. This is the first population found in Vermont since 1996, which is why the location is being withheld entirely.
