On Cumberland Plateau, nice to see on spring hikes.
What
Eastern Leatherwood (Dirca palustris)Observer
castaneaDescription
Terrible photo, but flowers still discernible.
What
Duskywings (Genus Erynnis)Observer
castaneaDescription
Not sure if I am correct on this one, but the buffy patch on forewing kinda makes me lean that way.
What
Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)Observer
castaneaDescription
Another car collision fatality of male Eastern Bluebird.
What
Mountain Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra acuminata)Observer
castaneaDescription
Nice to see, was a large specimen. Leaves alternate, flowers bisexual, in racemes.

Monarch larva munching on Asclepias incarnata.
What
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)Observer
castaneaDescription
Obvious car collision as cause of death.
What
Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus)Observer
castaneaDescription
Breaks my heart to see this on morning bike ride. Have observed several on adjacent telephone pole over the past several years, and an obvious car fatality. They swoop low to catch an insect on the road, and of course don't look both ways. I wish people would be more cautious, observant drivers concerning wildlife.
What
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)Observer
castaneaDescription
A boom year for these in my area. Lots of moisture and nectar to be found, luckily.
What
Brambles (Genus Rubus)Observer
castaneaDescription
At first I thought this may have been Rubus odorata.....but no. Any ideas would be appreciated. I should have taken more photos and had a closer look at fruit/seed capsule, whatever the heck that is!
What
Mountain Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra acuminata)Observer
castaneaDescription
Had to think about this one a bit; thought it may have been Itea virginica, but that species blooms earlier, and Clethra alnifolia I have seen, but much further south. Leaves are coarse, more deeply toothed than I. virginica, and bloom time seems a dead giveaway, plus Clethra acuminata is recorded for this county....so...... :-)
What
Ghost Pipe (Monotropa uniflora)Observer
castaneaDescription
Such a richly diverse area. See these seldom, and was a nice find.
What
Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans)Observer
castaneaDescription
A southern flying squirrel has taken occupancy of a bluebird box, pretty typical behavior. It's been interesting observing this fella (fellow?) not sure if it's nesting, has young, or is just making do with a rent free place.
What
Sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboreum)Observer
castaneaDescription
Shiny dark green leaves with campanulate flowers; I think these are very pretty evergreen shrubs, although they get fairly large, almost tree like. Too bad the fruit isn't good to eat!
What
American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana)Observer
castaneaDescription
Small understory tree seen here mostly in riparian areas. Always loved these trees. The biggest one I have seen was in Louisiana.
What
House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)Observer
castaneaDescription
Male house finch. These birds are so prolific here. Cycling on road, obviously a car collision fatality.
What
Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus)Observer
castaneaDescription
Male pileated woodpecker.....Such a neat bird, never tire of watching them!!
What
Helmet Skullcap (Scutellaria integrifolia)Observer
castaneaDescription
Leaves opposite, entire, lanceolate to oblanceolate, flowers blue and lower lip has 2 white markings. Growing in open woodland areas.

What
Cedarglade St. John's Wort (Hypericum frondosum)Observer
castaneaDescription
Showy wide petals, with broad bracts at end of branches. Lots of limestone outcroppings in this area, and fairly sure it is H. frondosum vs H. prolificum, because the latter always seems to have more flowers in each cyme, and are smaller.
What
Devil's Bit (Chamaelirium luteum)Observer
castaneaDescription
Been awhile since I've seen this plant...likely due to wrong place, wrong time. Such a pleasure to see again for sure.
What
Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia)Observer
castaneaDescription
Male cercropia finally made its exit from cocoon that had been attached to a Lindera benzoin all winter. So good to finally see one actually come out alive, that had not been parasitized!!
What
Eastern Beebalm (Monarda bradburiana)Observer
castaneaDescription
Such a tough plant, and nice to see with the purple spots and more compact growth habit as opposed to M. fistulosa (which is a fave as well.)
What
Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum)Observer
castaneaDescription
Seconday wing feathers along trail; along with several others scattered about. I have seen Cooper's in area previously. Perhaps it nailed this Cedar Waxwing.
What
Pale Oyster (Pleurotus pulmonarius)Observer
castaneaDescription
Given the paleness of the this oyster mushroom, perhaps it is P. pulmonarius, but just a guess, a Pleurotus nonetheless?
What
Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia)Observer
castaneaDescription
Another car collision fatality observed on bike ride. I'm thinking it's a song sparrow due to markings, but....maybe a field sparrow?
Photos / Sounds
What
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus)Observer
castaneaDescription
So sad to find this car collision fatality on walk with dog. My favorite species I think.
What
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)Observer
castaneaDescription
Saw this on morning walk; I have heard them vocalizing during first of year, through early spring. A secondary feather it appears. Have not heard them in quite a long time, but they are obviously around; it was in good shape and obviously recently molted.
