Bagworm Moths (Family Psychidae)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
bag moth larval stage approx 4mm long, on side of house. The second I've seen at this property. I think it's a little log cabin bag moth but would appreciate others' IDs. For scale: the vertical timber board shown in one photo has a width of approx 5cm.

Bamboo Moth (Artona martini)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
Beautiful black moth, veins (?technical term pls) apparent on wings at close inspection. I identified as Artona martini - bamboo moth - by comparison with www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/identification/animals/bug-id/what-is-this-bug/bugs-with-legs/6-legs/moths-and-butterflies/bamboo-moth . Not so similar to species pic in Andrew Crowe's "Which New Zealand Insect?"
What
South African Mantis (Miomantis caffra)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
ootheca (egg case), about 1cm long, found on corner of brick wall, Great North Rd. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd hate to have misidentified a piece of chewing gum...

What
South African Mantis (Miomantis caffra)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
ootheca (egg case), about 1cm long, found in my glasshouse. By comparison with another ootheca observation I'm reporting today, I thought this to be from a New Zealand praying mantis, but it looks similar to one reported by Jon as being from a South African praying mantis.

Nurseryweb Spider (Dolomedes minor)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
nursery web, with just discernable infant spiders, linking six different stems.
What
Blue Damselfly (Austrolestes colensonis)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
male or female?
paler than my earlier example but I read that they can change colour in different weather to regulate body temp - or perhaps the colour difference is gender-related?
What
Blue Damselfly (Austrolestes colensonis)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
male or female? Seen near Whatipu wetland.
What
Helpis minitabundaObserver
claire_gummerDescription
head and body about 1cm long, seen on protea at Whatipu Lodge. Common name Bronze Aussie Jumper.
What
Nurseryweb Spider (Dolomedes minor)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
As a newbie I am open to correction but believe these are infant nurseryweb spiders (Dolomedes minor), somewhat magnified, in muehlenbeckia. Lots of such webs in the area, though in most I investigated I couldn't see the spiderlings.
What
Lycaena Butterflies (Genus Lycaena)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
Is this a glade copper, Lycaena feredayi complex? On NZ flax, in an area where there is a lot of muehlenbeckia, next to the Whatipu wetland.
What
Australian Emerald Dragonfly (Hemicordulia australiae)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
near Whatipu wetland, where I also saw damselflies.
What
Smooth Stick Insect (Clitarchus hookeri)Observer
claire_gummerDescription
male and female stick insects mating on NZ flax. Clitarchus sp?? Female has 2 red protuberances, 1 each end of body, on 1 side only - tubercles? parasites? injuries? I have more photos; this is the most comprehensive with best focus.
What
Metablax cinctigerObserver
claire_gummerDescription
insect about the size of a click beetle, coloration like striped click beetle (Metablax cinctiger) but that's all, apart from being long and thin? Possibly on whau tree. Can't ID from Crowe's Which Insect, Landcare Research pages or your site (though I'm new to it - have much to learn).
