What
Genus ElaphomycesObserver
heatherdawsonDescription
Gregarious a few inches deep in the soil, two ripe ones found by dog, one less mature (non aromatic) found with further digging. Mature truffles very brittle and shattered when dug up, but the immature one was fairly solid (first two pictures). Looks like the inner cortex is lighter in the younger specimen, and a darker gray with maturity.
This black Elaphomyces has the same aroma as others I have collected under oaks, strong and persistent soil/mold/bitter scent that is pervasive even when dried. No “truffle” character to speak of.
