Sphagnum Subg. Subsecunda (Subgenus Subsecunda)

Observer

ianshackleford

Date

September 14, 2023 10:18 AM CDT

Description

Moist ground at edge of James Lake, among sedges. Photos 5 to 8 are branch leaves. Photos 9 & 10 are stem leaves, toothed at the apex. The green cells of the branch leaves seemed equally exposed on both surfaces. Some hyaline cells of branch leaves had many pores along the margin. For a while I wondered if this was S. subsecundum but the leaf shapes didn't seem to match. Elsewhere the pores seemed to favor the ends and corners of the cells. I thought it had the "drowned kitten" look.
