What

Green Ash Fraxinus pennsylvanica

Observer

Date

November 20, 2019 07:55 AM HST

Description

We think this is a green ash but there are no mature ash trees on the 30-acre property to compare. The land had been overgrazed and overgrown with cedar, but has been resting since 2016. This little tree is only about 30” tall an growing under a large cedar on the bank of a wet-weather creek. The flash of color drew our attention, and while walnut trees are common in this area, it didn’t look or smell like walnut. And, most of the walnuts have dropped their leaves by now.
The leaves were fragile, but it looks like there were 7-9 leaflets per leaf. I’ll recheck it again in the spring for more clues.

Description

This yellow flower was found within a few feet of the other yellow flower I just posted. They look similar except this one was not browsed. I think it is hairy goldenaster. The other one has browsed leaves so I think it is another type of goldenaster.

Description

This plant has been browsed so it's hard to get a good look at the leaves.

It was growing at the edge of a pile of sand so the white flecks are probably sand grains.

I have protected this plant with wire to hopefully allow it to grow some leaves back for a better ID.
