What

Ochre-tipped Darner (Dromaeschna weiskei)

Observer

lindsay-popple

Date

Description

Amazing dragonfly. In overcast weather, its tail gave the appearance of emanating its own light, like a lantern. It kept patrolling continuously while we observed for 10 minutes, even in light rain. These poor shots were for the best I could manage in the conditions - suitable for ID verification and record purposes only (there are much better photos on this platform).

Description

At first I thought this was a new species, but it was a one-off find and a new species of Psaltoda would be unlikely for this location. Now I suspect a possible hybrid between Psaltoda plaga and Psaltoda harrisii. Both of these species were common in the area. Song and morphology of this individual is somewhere in-between. Am posting here in case someone else makes an observation of something similar. Otherwise, just an anomaly, but an interesting call nonetheless.
