Disa uncinata or tripetaloides or...? Everything about it felt so different from tripetaloides that we want it to be something else, but I'm guessing the lack of club shape on the spur would make it not so.

Kleinmond camo-looper currently being reared

17 January 2020:

I've found my first ever camouflage-building Geometrid! If it wasn't walking around on a large, featureless Protea leaf at eye level in the middle of the path I never would have spotted it. Collected on Protea compacta at Kleinmond.

18 January 2020:

As there was no evidence of Protea usage in the caterpillar's camo-pack I gave it a small variety of finer leaved plants from the area I found it. The caterpillar incorporated a couple of fresh Berzelia abrotanoides leaves overnight, and fiddled around with the inflorescences. I'm not sure that it ever fed on anything.

19 January 2020:

After it sat still in the same spot for a full day I investigated, and found that it had affixed itself to the Berzelia with silk and appeared to be cocooning. Now we wait :)

Ironwood spinner #3 reared

3 January 2020:

Collected an inflorescence of Olea capensis with clear evidence of caterpillar activity (frass and silk). After some serious prodding the tiny caterpillar reversed out of its hiding place for a quick photo op.

11 January 2020:

I did not need to give fresh food plant at any point, and did not see the caterpillar again either. Today a tiny grey moth appeared.

Grape dangler reared

1 January 2020:

First caterpillar of the new year! Found dangling in its little leaf shelter, just about at eye level under our Cape grape pergola.

2 January 2020:

After exploring its new accommodation for a while the caterpillar made its way onto the grape leaf provided and attached itself to pupate.

13 January 2020:

A tiny little moth emerged.

This is the same species as https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/20967199 which was submitted and included in the rearing files but without ID (CRG master others.pdf).

Kleinmond red tussock reared

5 January 2020:

Collected caterpillar on Berzelia abrotanoides.

13 January 2020:

Caterpillar started cocooning.

16 January 2020:

I carefully removed the cocoon from the host plant and noticed that the contents were round and grublike rather than pupa-shaped. Cutting it open confirmed my suspision: a freshly emerged wingless female.

17 January 2020:

The plot thickens! The female shed her shiny smooth covering one day later, revealing the usual body fluff underneath. I had always understood this thin covering to be the pupal casing, but in my photos from 16/01 the legs and head are clearly present so surely that must be an already emerged imago. This begs the question: how did she emerge from pupal stage if there is no discarded pupal skin? Are my previous adult photos in fact still a pupa... but with legs? If that is the case the date of adult emergence would be 17/01/2020.
