This is a total stab in the dark for me. I am not convinced of suggested ID's but this matches the best visually. I think the hedge is a Red Robin (Photinia x fraseri ) and it has been steadily deteriorating in condition.

It is either the Plain Tiger or the Lesser Wanderer. I know the lesser wanderer has been introduced to NZ.
It is smaller than your average Monarch Butterfly but much larger than admirals.

some sort of cocoon on a piece of driftwood washed up on the beach. 5 to 6 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. It resembles the emperor gum moth's cocoon, but I am not sure that is what it is.

Birds (Class Aves)Observer

I am not sure about my ID. The egg was found by a naughty boy, who ventured into the sand dune vegetation (do not worry he got a big telling off). The egg is about 4 to 5 cm long and approx 3 cm wide. Mostly white. I asked the young boy to show me exactly were he found it, but am not sure he was able to retrace his steps with certainty. I had a look around and could not see any other eggs or signs of nest or burrows. It may well be an abandoned egg? Either way I placed it back around where he thought it was found and didn't linger in the dunes much longer, in case the parent was still about. Anyone have any idea on what birds may lay eggs of this description on the sand dunes of Matarangi?
