Description

I found 10-12 of these mysterious beetle larvae in a batch of dead hanging leaves. Best guess, suggested by Melyridae authority Adrian Mayor, is that they are melyrid larvae. I must say that they do not have the same look as other melyrid larvae I have collected, which have usually been more colorful and often with upper body markings. The strangest thing about these larvae, however, is that they have retained and somehow strung together their exuviae (shed skins) as a pale trailer that I presume is a decoy for potential predators. This impression was reinforced by my observation that these were occasionally raised and slowly wagged side to side. The larvae easily detatch from their trailers, which I assume they would do if a predator pounced on it. I had hoped to rear one to establish for certain what they were but I think some Telephanus larvae I had in with them had them for lunch. Any I collect in the future will be isolated from anything that might eat them.

This beetle that I found hiding on the underside of the leaf of a Cyclanthaceae plant in Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, 2100 meters altitude was a myster beetle for me so I sent pics to Albert Allen. Al has for years been my main mystery beetle advisor and here is his determination based on these low-res. images: "Mycteridae, Lacconotinae near Physicus." It is certainly a far cry from my only other mycterid to date but the family is like that, extreme morphological diversity.

UPDATE: Darren Pollock has been desribing new species, publishing, and revising the taxanomy of neotropical Mycteridae and he says this one belongs in Genus Thisiomorphus and appears to be one of the new species he has described and submitted for publication, though from my images it's difficult to tell for certain.

Description

I didn't know what these larvae were when I collected them from beneath bark I peeled off a dead tree I cut down in my cloud forest locale (Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador at ~2100 meters elevation) but they looked interesting. I collected four that I am hoping to rear in order to find out what they are. Under the same dead tree's bark I also collected an apparently teneral adult Inopeplus (beetle family Salpingidae, subfamily Inopelpinae) and I wondered if possibly they were related. I came upon Russian larva specialist Artem Zaitsev's meticulous photos of a larva of Inopeplus dimidiatus (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/25258027@N02/3409533775) and the anatomy bears a very close resemblance, so close that I determined that's what their genus must be. I also sent pics to Darren Pollock, one of my advisers on offbeat beetle families and a coauthor with me on a paper describing pythid beetle larvae (genus Ischyomius). He concurred, saying he's 99% certain these are Inopeplus larvae.

Description

I found this apparently teneral beetle of family Salpingidae, subfamily Inopeplinae, and probably genus Inopeplus under bark that was high up on a dead tree I felled specifically to look for subcortical species. It's only the second member of Inopeplinae that I have found in over six years collecting at this locale in Cosanga, Napo, Ecuador, ~2100 meters elevation.
