What
Mites and Ticks (Subclass Acari)Observer
mcdunnDescription
Serious population explosion of soft bodied little mites after very rainy period. At first, thought it was frass and crushed some and noted a very distinct citrus smell. Magnified, I could see they were mites (soil/mold mites?). They measure about 0.8 mm length and around 0.5 mm in width (1.0 mm graduation marks shown in second photo). Don't think (hope) they are mammalian biters.

What
Hispaniolan Boa (Chilabothrus striatus)Observer
mcdunnDescription
This small snake was stuck in a 250 gallon water tank. Came out of water pipe while tank was being filled. Put a 1.25 inch pvc pipe to assist it, as it could not get out. Poor critter immediately coiled itself around pipe and made its way out when I moved away. Maybe a young Hispaniolan Boa. Measured about 30 inches in length and about 5/8 inch width at thickest part. Slithered off into thick vegetation.

What
Genus EphutaObserver
mcdunnDescription
Observed this ant-like insect (4 to 5 mm length) in the leaf litter. The white spots on the abdomen where what caught my attention as they make the abdomen look like a skull and really stood out. This may be a female Mutillidae species. The male (I think) was nearby (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/155043294).
