Description

Wanted to photograph some interesting interesting variation in Lampsilis cardium periostracum color. Specimens collected by Ian Cameron, Isabella del Furia, and Mark Hove while feeling around for mussels in St. Croix River along MN shoreline with hands in ≤4 ft depth. Quite a bit of Vallisneria in area and mostly sand substrate with patches of gravel and cobble. Three specimens pictured.

Description

Mark Hove collected 1 dead Fragile Papershell while feeling for mussels in the St. Croix River along NE margin of Point Douglas with bare feet and hands between the shore and 5 feet of water over a period of ≈2 hours between 15T 515339 4955070 to 515367 4955072. Habitat consisted primarily of soft sand, occasional silt or riprap. Lots of Vallisneria and some other macrophytes, mussels usually in open areas or in less dense macrophyte beds. Collected primarily at 3-5 ft but also a little in shallower water (1-3 ft). Two young people, Taylor and Emilyn helped collect some live mussels and shells, and helped sort and count mussels. One specimen pictured.
