What
Western White Pine (Pinus monticola)Observer
mdpurdyDescription
On and around the carbonate of Mammoth Rock you can find all three of the common 5-needle pines of the Eastern Sierra (Pinus albicaulis, P. flexilis, and P. monticola) growing in close proximity (within ~20 m). This is the only place I've been in the Eastern Sierra where all three of these species co-occur so closely together.

Snowfield Sagebrush (Artemisia spiciformis)Observer
mdpurdyDescription
The only convincing Artemisia spiciformis I have met in the field (assuming I've correctly IDed it correctly), and clearly distinct from A. rothrockii at this location, at least (with which it is apparently frequently confused per Shultz's Jepson and FNA treatments).
This species appears to be commonly collected from Mammoth Lakes northward in the Sierra Nevada, but I'm suspicious of A. spiciformis records south of here in CA based on a sample of specimens and observations that I've personally examined (e.g., A. rothrockii, B. Castro 1304).

Opposite serrate leaves and phyllaries in a single row seem distinctive but haven't taken the time to look closely at likely options yet!

Subgenus TanaemyrmexObserver
mdpurdyDescription
I think but not positive. ID informed by experience on CAST XIV where we spent months searching for and trying to eradicate this species from Johnston Atoll.
