Description

This observation referring to the bright yellow Acarospora growing over the orange lichen and around the Glypholecia scabra in the centre.

Thallus UV+ (orange). Spores ~4-4.5 x 2.5-3 μm.

Description

Apothecia turning a brilliant deep purple in KOH, spores polarilocular, 17.7 x 8.8 micrometres. Septum up to 3.5 micrometres. Growing on moss in sheltered, humid site on ledges of limestone rock. Apothecia 0.5-1.2 mm.

Four spores per ascus. Spores 31.0 x 6.0 μm (n=5), one septate and much longer than wide. Photobiont Trebouxia or similar. Paraphyses simple, unbranched, without pigmented tips or expanded heads, ~ 2.5 μm wide. Growing on non-calcareous rock in dry prairie grassland habitat, full sun.

Description

Forming distinctive rosettes from a single basal holdfast. Seasonally inundated on dolomite slab. Medulla turning red on Melzer's reagent, turning brown after a minute or so. Perithecia are ~180 x 205 μm. Spores are ~8.8 x 6.7 μm from a mature perithecium.

Lobes a brownish green only erratically when wet (bottom rosette in the third photo), underside a smooth light brown with no rhizines. Not reticulate beneath.

Description

Apothecia ~0.2–0.5 mm. Spores mostly 2 celled, sizes 18.8 x 9.9 μm (n=3). Growing over moss and decaying organic matter in calcareous, sunny habitat. Hypothecium is super distinctive and clear, left behind after the apothecia are relatively easily removed. Paraphyses seem to be unbranched.

Description

Underside lacking plates, only tan coloured rhizines. Rhizines lacking from margins but only appearing to overlap edges. Apothecia are very smooth surfaced, not fissured. Attached to substrate by single central holdfast, densely white pruinose above.

Growing on ledges of limestone rock crevices. Leaves whitish below. Although the sample is at the upper end of the range of variability in size in the FNA treatment (a large plant), every description seems to match the FNA treatment for arenosa ssp arenosa (both short and long petiole hairs).
