Spiny Fly
Identified as Tritaxys milias on Bowerbird by Ken Walker: "Dr Bryan Cantrell initially identified this fly in the genus Goniophthalmus but he we was on holidays at the time and away from his references sources, he asked me to wait until he returned home before the identification was confirmed. Bryan arrived home and wrote to me today saying: "As I suggested in my earlier email, this is Tritaxys milias (Walker). Like Goniophthalmus, these flies lay microtype eggs on host foliage and if ingested while a host is feeding the eggs hatch, larvae leave the gut and feed on host tissue. Hosts are Lepidoptera. Goniophthalmus has bare eyes while Tritaxys has hairy eyes, which may be clearly seen in the photograph. Initially I mistook the reclinate orbital setae for reclinate ocellar setae, which is one of the characteristics of Goniophthalmus and jumped to the wrong conclusion; later the bare eyes character triggered in my brain, hence my recall notice on the identification.""

Mean looking fly
Identified as Odyneromyia spadix on Bowerbird by Tony D.: "Great capture Mitch. There are more species for genus but looking at their descriptions I'm confident on O. spadix - the others either darker or with spots formed dorsally on the thorax (found on the scutum or scutellum). Mark, perhaps a family slip being very similar genus name."
