Description

This Jelly Lichen was dessicated when we found it on the trunk of a Blue Oak (Q. douglasii) (photo 2). After pouring a little water on it, it expanded and revealed its greenish-black coloration and numerous pustule-like apothecia (photo 1).

Description

Thick patches of this lichen were found growing on the trunks of Blue Oaks (Q. douglasii). A small sample was given a spot test using bleach instead of KOH and it turned deep red, separating it from the very similar genus Flavoparmelia.

I was thrilled to see this small stonefly land on a patch of snow alongside the trail. It was separated from the similar winter stoneflies (family Taeniopterygidae) by the pattern of its wing venation.
