Epipelic sample from small stream running into Millers Bay.
Length range 334-344.5 μm. Breadth range 9-12 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 24-25, fibulae density (per 10 μm) range 5-6.
Valves appear sigmoid in shape with hook-shaped valve ends. Striae density is distinctive for this species.

From periphyton squeeze in Freda Haffner Kettlehole.
Length range 47-50 μm. Breadth range 13-14 μm at broadest part of headpole. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 10-11.
Gomphonema acuminatum is distinguishable from other gomphonema species by the inflation at the headpole being wider than the central inflation and the pronounced apical inflation at the head of the valve.

From brown slime on rocks at Dead Run Baltimore.
Length range 21-35 μm. Breadth range 13-16 μm. Transapical costa density (per 10 μm) range 18-20. Marginal fibula (per 10 μm) range 5-6.
Cuneately rounded apex remains present in larger specimens, differentiating these specimens fro S. ovalis.

From growth on submerged plants in Jacksons Creek, Gisborne.
Length range 83-91 μm. Breadth range 6-6.5 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 13-14. Striae near center have 5-6 punctae per striae, while near the ends striae have 2-3 punctae each.

From biofilm growth on a rock in the Chemistry Pond at Monash University Clayton.
Length range 23-24 μm. Breadth range 5-6 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 12-13.
Valve ends are narrower than the central part of the valve and are not upturned.
There appears to be some confusion in the literature regarding this species at smaller size ranges, however observed specimens resemble specimens pictured in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (2004), Pg. 191, Plate 149 Figs 18-19 and Foged, N, 1978, Pg. 57, Plate 12, Figs 11-13 and therefore these specimens have been identified as Eunotia diodon. Additionally, Eunotia species of similar appearance have not been reported in Australia (McCarthy, 2013) apart from E. diodon.

Stigma centrally located in area between proximal raphe ends and valve edge. Stigma appeared somewhat slit-like.

Brown slime scraped from rocks near bank.
Length range 16-20 μm. Breadth range 5.5-6.5 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) 13 for all observed specimens.
No hood was observed on the central area in the rapheless valve.

Chironomid larvae were retrieved from dredged sediment. Larvae were decapitated and intestinal contents were removed.
Length range 117-149 μm. Breadth range 25-31 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 13-14 (longitudinal) and 24-25 (transverse).
Distal raphe ends hooked to same side, proximal raphe ends straight. Striae punctate, straight. Central area small.

Collected from top 5 mm of sediment dredged from the bottom of the lake.
Length range 98-109 μm. Breadth range 15-16 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) 7-8.
Striae are lineate, radiate and hooked towards the end of the valve. Distal striae ends are hooked. Central area is rounded.

Length range 30-33 μm. Breadth range 7-9.5 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 12-13. Costae density (per 10 μm) range 6-8. Between 1 and 3 (most often 2) striae between costae.

Length range 185-230 μm. Breadth range 23-25 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range: 11-12 (transverse), 12-13 (longitudinal).
Longitudinal striae more distinct than transverse striae.

Central area bordered by shorter striae. Raphes straight. No stigmoids observed in central area.

Central area elliptical with lunate markings visible. Apices rounded.

From algal mat retrieved from hillside seep.
Length range 49-59 μm. Breadth range 5-6 μm. Costae density (per 10 μm) range 3-6. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 17-18.
Distinct pseuduoraphe visible. Capitate valve ends distinguish these speciemens from M. circulare var. circulare.

Epidendric from Beck's Canal.
Length range 13 -14 μm. Breadth range 5-5.5 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) 23-24 (not distinguishable on one sample).
Both raphe and rapheless valve observed.

From 20 μm plankton tow in Beck's canal.
Length range 182-232 μm. Breadth range 50-52 μm. Porcae density between 1-1.5 per 10 μm. Porcae sometimes offset. Headpole and footpole both cuneate. Axial area narrow.

Collected in 10 μm planktic drag net, however diatom is not planktic and was probably from kicked up sediment in the water column.
Length range 64-66 μm. Breadth range 15-16 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 20-21. Punctae density (per 10 μm) range 16-17.
Accepted length and shape varies in literature, however the rostrate valve ends are most consistently observed for N. productum compared to similar Neidium species. Proximal raphe ends are sharply hooked in opposite directions. Observed samples closely match specimen described in Patrick & Reimer (1966).
