Genus DiploneisObserver
stephanierobsonDescription
Epipsammic sample from knee high water in Port Phillip Bay.
Length range 20-38 μm. Breadth range 12-15 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) 15-18.
Raphe structure, shape of central area and longitudinal rib most closely match Diploneis papula in Witkowski et. al. (2000). Length range given as 35-43 μm in Hallegraeff et. al. (2010) in specimens from Port Phillip Bay. Specimens in Witkowski et. al. (2000) and Hallegraeff et. al. (2010)
feature more rounded sides, however specimens in Idei et. al. (2013) show more constricted sides. Specimens from California, Japan, France and Australia can be seen to vary significantly in size and morphology.
Striae density in samples observed from Middle Park Beach have finer striae than literature specimens (given as 9-14 striae per 10 μm).

Striae singly punctate, whereas R. Gibba has costae with 2-3 rows of striae between. Striae density in Foged 1979 is 15 per 10 μm. Specimens observed are longer and narrower and have a more pronounced curve on the dorsal margin than R. novae zealandiae var ventricosa.
Scale bar 10 μm.
What
Eunotia diodonObserver
stephanierobsonDescription
From biofilm growth on a rock in the Chemistry Pond at Monash University Clayton.
Length range 23-24 μm. Breadth range 5-6 μm. Striae density (per 10 μm) range 12-13.
Valve ends are narrower than the central part of the valve and are not upturned.
There appears to be some confusion in the literature regarding this species at smaller size ranges, however observed specimens resemble specimens pictured in Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (2004), Pg. 191, Plate 149 Figs 18-19 and Foged, N, 1978, Pg. 57, Plate 12, Figs 11-13 and therefore these specimens have been identified as Eunotia diodon. Additionally, Eunotia species of similar appearance have not been reported in Australia (McCarthy, 2013) apart from E. diodon.
