What

American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

Observer

walnut-cactus

Date

February 14, 2020 10:13 AM CST

Description

Very surprised to see this big roach outside a lecture hall with it being so cold and populated. I'd expect them all to be inside instead.

What

Fungi Including Lichens (Kingdom Fungi)

Observer

walnut-cactus

Date

Description

I saw this growing on a rock bridge near the creek. The area directly above was shielded from sunlight by plenty of tree branches and may have even fallen from them to colonize the rock.

What

Tropical Sage (Salvia coccinea)

Observer

Date

Description

I didn't see this plant flowering like this last week. The rainy weekend might have helped.

What

Great-tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus)

Observer

walnut-cactus

Date

February 12, 2020 03:23 PM CST

Description

These grackles(?) were picking up some berries from the nearby bushes. They're more cautious of people than the squirrels as they flew away when I tried to approach them.

What

Ballmoss (Tillandsia recurvata)

Observer

Date

Description

I think this tangle of plant fur is ball moss. This specific one probably fell from the tree where many, many more of it's friends seem to be situated.

I wonder why these have adapted to have more than one color variation in the flowers.

Almost missed this little critter. It looks like its resting. The moist area may be favorable for its survival here.

What

American Asters (Genus Symphyotrichum)

Observer

walnut-cactus

Date

January 31, 2020 09:33 AM CST

Description

This beauty was perched about 6 feet above the riverbank just smiling at passersby students. I think its location provides just the right amount of water and sunlight along with a little tree cover.
