Description

I went out with Paul Turbitt of the Halifax based Turtle Patrol to an abandoned rail line section to check for baby turtles where he knows snapper turtles have nested - some unfortunately between the rail lines. Many baby turtles hatch and can't get over the rails and die from overheating and dehydration.
I was excited to help rescue this one. He swam away a few minutes later. 14 more live ones were found stuck between the rails yesterday. 9 were dead. Anyone have ideas for how to change this scenario besides patrolling for trapped baby snappers?
Paul took the shot.

Description

A whole family of raccoons (4) dead, strewn across 2 lanes of highway, the mother with her legs in the air. Though there was a lot of traffic, I was able to get the mother and one young one off - in part because I couldn't leave the creature on the road like garbage and indignity. I moved the mother and one pup to the edge of the highway together. The mother was clearly still nursing. I had to sit in my car for a while to compose myself.

Dead on the road at the ocean side of the new exit 5A interchange off hwy 103 (I suspect there are many killed on this new hwy through what was wilderness). It was very sad to see this guy. It was face up when I found it. I turned it over and carried it off the road w a shovel and put it in the grass when no cars were coming.

I accidentally collided into this butterfly crossing the rail trail I was biking on. I went back to see if it was dead. It was not, but one wing was torn apart. I put it out if suffering and moved it off the trail. Very sad to hit this beauty just flying by, not expecting a bike burning through its path.

I saw this bird fluttering in the road unable to fly as I drove by. It had been hit by a car but wasn't dead. I stopped and got the bird off the road, hoping it was stunned and would revive. I was holding it in my hands shielding its eyes to calm it and carried it to a stream to give a bit of water when it shuddered a few times and died.
A beautiful bird. This was heart wrenching to record. Head trauma on one side was visible.
